Special
Services
Occasionally, a child will experience continuing
learning difficulties. Parents and the school team (child study team
referred to as the Evaluation Team) will need to explore ways to help
the child with her/his learning problems. Upon parent permission,
the school psychologist will assess the child and consult with the
parents and other school personnel in developing an appropriate educational
program. The Renton School District provides language, speech, and
hearing services, programs for the handicapped, and tutoring services
for students who have need for such programs. Before any special program
is considered, parental involvement and permission is requested.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM (LAP)
LAP is designed to help those students
who need to improve their skills in reading. The program's goal
is to help students acquire basic reading skills. Students in
greatest need are served first. The program is a supplement to
regular classroom instruction and does not replace basic academic
subjects. Parent permission is necessary for a student to enter
the program and students may be referred at anytime by the classroom
teacher. Instruction is provided by Instructional Assistants under
the guidance of classroom teachers.

language is other than English to develop and apply language skills
to academic content. Instruction is provided by Instructional
Assistants under the guidance of an ESL teacher.

LIBRARY
The library serves as a classroom of research
materials for Tiffany Park students, staff, and parents. The librarian
works with each classroom 45 minutes per week and provides assistance
for teachers with the enrichment of classroom curriculum units.
All students participate in the discovery of the joy of reading
through sharing books, storytelling, and visual literature. Upper
grades begin to develop library research skills. Books are checked
out for one week. If books are damaged or lost, the library charges
a replacement fee. The Renton area has several public library
facilities available. Renton
Public Library is built over the Cedar River next to City Hall.
The Fairwood Library is part of the King County Public Library
System. Check with a library to see which system's area you live
in.
