Special Services

Occasionally, a child will experience continuing learning difficulties. Parents and the school team (child study team referred to as the Evaluation Team) will need to explore ways to help the child with her/his learning problems. Upon parent permission, the school psychologist will assess the child and consult with the parents and other school personnel in developing an appropriate educational program. The Renton School District provides language, speech, and hearing services, programs for the handicapped, and tutoring services for students who have need for such programs. Before any special program is considered, parental involvement and permission is requested.

TITLE I

Title I is a federally funded supplemental program especially designed to serve students who require extra help in reading. Students are selected according to test scores, class work, teacher and parent recommendation. The Title I teacher works with small groups of students coordinating instruction with that of the regular classroom teacher.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LAP)

LAP is designed to help those students who need to improve their skills in reading. The program's goal is to help students acquire basic reading skills. Students in greatest need are served first. The program is a supplement to regular classroom instruction and does not replace basic academic subjects. Parent permission is necessary for a student to enter the program and students may be referred at anytime by the classroom teacher. Instruction is provided by Instructional Assistants under the guidance of classroom teachers.

ENGLISH-AS-A-SECOND-LANGUAGE (ESL)

Our school has a number of families who have recently immigrated to the United States. The program goal is to work with small groups of selected students whose dominant language is other than English to develop and apply language skills to academic content. Instruction is provided by Instructional Assistants under the guidance of an ESL teacher.

LIBRARY

The library serves as a classroom of research materials for Tiffany Park students, staff, and parents. The librarian works with each classroom 45 minutes per week and provides assistance for teachers with the enrichment of classroom curriculum units. All students participate in the discovery of the joy of reading through sharing books, storytelling, and visual literature. Upper grades begin to develop library research skills. Books are checked out for one week. If books are damaged or lost, the library charges a replacement fee. The Renton area has several public library facilities available. Renton
Public Library is built over the Cedar River next to City Hall. The Fairwood Library is part of the King County Public Library System. Check with a library to see which system's area you live in.

RESOURCE ROOM

The Resource Room teacher's role is to plan and implement an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for students qualified for Special Education services. Students may be eligible to receive services in reading, language arts, and math. Instruction is provided by a teacher and an Instructional Assistant.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

The counselor serves students in grades Kindergarten through five at Tiffany Park. The program helps students to improve self-esteem and/or peer interaction skills. Students are referred by teachers, parents, and/or principal.

SCHOOL NURSE

The school nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for conducting health screenings (notifying parents if further medical evaluation is needed), assisting with individual medical concerns, and helping coordinate services between home and other health agencies. The nurse assesses medical problems that arise at school, supervises health room procedures, consults/instructs on health related issues and is helpful in recommending community resources for a variety of health related needs. The nurse is available to students several days a week and is on call for emergency situations.

SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST (SLP)

These services are available at Tiffany Park for those children determined to be in need of speech and/or language therapy. Referrals to the SLP for speech/language testing or consultation are received from parents, teachers, specialists and outside agencies. Children in the Tiffany Park service area who are at least three years old may be referred for services.
