Nutrition Services
Breakfast & Lunch Program
Lunch is an integral part of
your child's day-- they need the fuel for their afternoon endeavors.
Hot lunches are served daily, and milk is available for students
who bring a sack lunch. Once a month, a menu is published and
sent home with students, usually with the school newsletter. It
is vitally important that as parents, you make arrangements for
your child's lunch. Lunch prices for the 2002-2003 school year
are as follows:
Hot Lunches (includes milk) $1.50
Milk Only $ .35
If a child forgets lunch, he /she will
receive a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and be charged $.25,
payable the following school day. If the child makes a habit of
forgetting lunch or asking for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,
a note will be sent home requesting adequate plans be made for
lunch.
Renton School District Nutrition Services
has a program which makes it possible for parents to send money
to school to be deposited into their child's lunch account. A
notice is sent home with the student when there are five days
of lunches left in the account. Make checks payable to "Renton
School District # 403". Be sure to include your child's name
and school on your check.
Additionally, our school offers a Breakfast
Program from 8:20 a.m. to 8:35 a.m. each morning. The regular
cost is $.75.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Free and Reduced Lunches
Under provisions of the National
School Lunch Act, free or reduced price lunches are available
to children of families who qualify. In certain cases, foster
children are eligible for these benefits. Free or reduced price
lunch application forms are sent home before the first day of
school, and are given to the parents of new students upon enrollment.
Occasionally, a change in family income or size during the school
year may qualify youngsters who were earlier not eligible. Should
this be your case, please contact the school office.

Birthday Celebrations
Many Tiffany Park students enjoy celebrating their birthday with their classmates. While we want to continue to allow our children the opportunity to share in the excitement and joy of turning another year older, we do wish to keep these celebrations short and with minimal distraction to regular classroom learning. Most teachers acknowledge a birthday in some brief manner, including children whose birthdays are in the summer. Some children enjoy bringing a treat as well. If you and your child wish to treat the class, please consult with the classroom teacher before bringing a birthday treat, so that the treats do not conflict with classroom activities and/or schedules. Birthday treats must be store bought “finger food” (such as cookies or cupcakes). Teachers will not accept anything that needs to be cut, scooped, or poured. Special treat bags for classmates and other birthday party items, such as single balloons or balloon bouquets, party hats, and noise makers are not permitted. These items distract from our learning environment and are more appropriate for home celebrations.

Attendance
We strongly believe that student attendance
has a direct correlation to school success. Regular school attendance
is necessary for mastery of the educational program provided to
students of the district. Learning that takes place may not always
be replicated. We want to provide the best education possible
for your child, but can only do so if your child is at school
on a regular basis. In the State of Washington, RCW 28A.225.010
outlines mandatory school attendance for all children ages 6-18.
Parents shall cause their child or children to attend school and
children have the responsibility to attend full time. If we may
assist you in getting your child to school regularly you are welcome
to call the principal, your childs teacher, or the school
counselor. If your child has a high number of absences, and/or
tardies, excused or unexcused, your son or daughter may be identified
as a "student of concern" and action may be taken to
develop a plan to address this concern.
We request you contact the school office before 9:00 a.m. if your
child will be absent or late. During an extended illness, it is
only necessary to call the office on the first day of such absence.
Upon return to school, a note signed by you, including reason
and date(s) of absence/tardy is required. The note should be given
to your childs classroom teacher or the attendance secretary.
If a child fails to attend school without valid justification,
we will inform the childs custodial parent(s)/guardian(s)
along with potential legal consequences.

Students are not automatically covered with medical or accident
insurance by the school district. Insurance applications are sent
home with your child during the first week of school each year.
If you wish to purchase insurance, send your completed application
directly to the insurance carrier.
Bus Safety
* When students are waiting for the bus, they should be orderly
and form a single line.
* When boarding the bus, they are not to shove or push, but rather
take their time so no one will be hurt.
* Obey the driver promptly and willingly.
* No glass containers, or any animal or plant materials (living
or not).
* Keep hands, arms and head inside the bus, whether it is moving
or stationary.
* Discipline referrals (with possible loss of bus riding privileges)
will be issued for inappropriate bus line/bus riding behavior.
* While riding the bus, students are to remain in their seats
facing forward.
* A pass will be issued by the office if a student is to ride
a different bus or depart at a stop that is not the usual departure
point. Parents are requested to send a note with their child explaining
changes in their child's daily bus riding procedures.
Child Safety
Be sure to go over the following guidelines with your child:
* Go directly to and from school
* Never walk or run between cars parked on the street
* Cross at crosswalks with the safety patrol, in a crosswalk,
or at corners
* Walk on the side of the road facing traffic
* Do not speak with or accept rides, candy, or anything from strangers
* Do not provide directions to a stranger
* If your child is bothered on the way to or from school, notify
the office staff immediately
* Make sure the way to school is the safest way
* Look up and down the street and around the corner, and then
listen for cars before crossing

he/she enters. Proof of age with a copy of the child's birth certificate
is required upon registration. A child entering first grade must

Field Trips
The District provides field trips for students as an extension
of the adopted curriculum. PTA and parents supplement these trips
by providing donations for additional outings. Parents are welcome
and encouraged to help in chaperoning students on these outings.
Parents are requested to complete a Washington State Patrol Request
For Criminal History Information form prior to chaperoning. Please
contact your childs teacher if interested.

|
|
Legal Custody
A legal document is required to support any questions of custody
between divorced or separated parents. Otherwise, either natural
parent is considered to have the right to request contact with
or pick up children at dismissal time. Please contact the principal
for more information.

|
|
Directory Information
Federal law and school district regulations allow schools to release
directory type information (student name, address, phone, date/place
of birth, dates of attendance, awards received and previous schools)
to such agencies as local news or PTA unless parents notify the
school of their wishes to the contrary. Information other than
directory information is considered confidential.
From time to time, the Renton School District uses pictures of
students in educational publications. Please notify us in writing
if you do not want your child's picture used.

|
Personal Belongings/Lost
and Found
Students bring personal items and money to school at their own
risk. Though our school takes every precaution to safeguard private
property, we do not take responsibility for lost articles brought
to school for display or other purposes. Any money brought to
school should be deposited with your childs teacher. All
removable clothing and all lunch boxes should be tagged or marked
for easy identification. The "Lost and Found" is located
near the cafeteria. Following Conferences, Thanksgiving Break,
Open House and the end of the school year, any items left in the
"Lost and Found" will be donated to a local agency.
If you are missing any items, please have your child check regularly
and prior to these disbursement dates.

|
|
Loss or Damage
A child may be assessed costs to replace any school materials
or properties which are lost, stolen, or damaged through his/her
negligence. The school cannot assume financial responsibility
for damage of personal property that may arise from a student
accident. It is recommended that valuable property be left at
home, and items such as glasses, jewelry, etc. be covered under
personal homeowner or tenant's insurance.

|
|
Students Leaving
School Early
Students are expected to remain at school during the school day.
For safety reasons, parents are requested to come to the school
office to sign their child out of school if it is necessary for
children to leave before dismissal time.

|
|
Emergency Forms
The importance of our emergency forms cannot be overly emphasized.
It is important that the school have an accurate home phone number,
and a reliable alternate phone number. It is extremely important
that the school have this information immediately. During the
first month of school, your child brought home an emergency form
to be completed. We ask that you complete this form and return
it to school if you have not done so already. Also, please notify
the school immediately if any changes occur during the course
of the year.

Weapons
Under state law RCW 9.41.280, it is a gross misdemeanor for any person to carry or possess a dangerous weapon or firearm on public school premises. Firearms/weapons are not allowed in school; at school-sponsored activities; on school grounds or facilities; or on school-provided
transportation. If a student brings a firearm/weapon to school, it will result in an immediate expulsion for no less
than one calendar year, and notification of law enforcement.
Students who violate the statute are, following regular due process, to be expelled from the district in which they committed the violation and are considered expelled from all public schools in the state.
Renton School District policy also prohibits laser pens and objects that look like weapons, such as toy guns
and toy knives. A student who brings such an object to school, on a school bus, or to a school activity can expect
serious consequences, up to and including expulsion. In addition, state law criminalizes the discharge of a
laser at a bus driver. Students or staff who are aware of
weapons on campus and do not report the information to school authorities are subject to discipline. The confidential Renton School District weapons hotline number is
(425)204-2468.
