WHAT IS ELL?

English Language Learners (ELL), also referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL), is a program in the Renton School District that addresses the needs of students who do not speak English as their native language. It is designed to develop the students' English proficiency, providing them with both the skills and confidence they need to participate fully in school and the community.

Researched-based instruction is used, which emphasizes listening and speaking skills first; then reading and writing skills. Our ELL/ESL teachers and paraprofessionals work in collaboration with the classroom teachers to effectively teach ELL/ESL students.

Elementary ELL/ESL students participate in mainstream classes as well as scheduled ELL/ESL instruction based on each student's proficiency level and grade level. Small group instruction is provided by the ESL teacher or paraprofessional and is designed to develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills in English.

The secondary level ELL/ESL program is designed to provide ELL/ESL students focused English language development while they are taking the regular curriculum in English.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY FOR ELL/ESL

How do I know if my student will be eligible for the ELL/ESL program?

Through state approved language proficiency testing. Based on these test results, you will be notified whether they will qualify for ELL/ESL.

What test will my child take?

The Washington Language Proficiency Placement test (WLPT-II). Students scoring within the limited proficiency levels will be eligible for ELL/ESL services

How long will my child be in ELL/ESL?

Students remain in the ELL/ESL program until they have mastered the skills needed to pass the annual Washington Language Proficiency Test (WLPTII) OR the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

STUDENT ENROLLMENT IN THE ELL/ESL PROGRAM

Your student must be registered at school before registering for ELL/ESL services.

School Registration Packet

All new families are given a packet of information about their student's school with forms that the school needs you to complete and return to them. These forms provide emergency contact, immunization, home language and other important information about your student.

Home Language Survey

As part of all students' registration, families fill out this form which indicates a language other than English is spoken by the student. Parents also fill out an ELL/ESL Referral Form at this time.

Testing

Students are given a test to determine their English skills, the Washington Language Proficiency Placement Test (WLPT-II).

Notification

If the student qualifies for ELL/ESL Services, a letter will be sent home to parents.
