Nearly 92 percent of Renton School District seniors meet key graduation requirement
Class of 2008 first class that must also pass WASL to graduate

June 6, 2008—The state’s education office this week announced that nearly 92 percent of seniors in the Renton School District had demonstrated they have solid reading and writing skills as measured on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) and had met one of several key requirements to graduate.

Statewide, 91.4 percent of seniors met the WASL requirement.

The Class of 2008 is the first class that must pass the reading and writing portions of the WASL, or complete one of several alternatives, as one part of their graduation requirements. Other requirements include:

• Earn sufficient credits (Renton School District requires 22; state requirement is 19)
• Complete a High School and Beyond Plan
• Complete a Culminating Project

Most seniors met the WASL requirement in the 10th or 11th grade. Some 12th-graders also took the WASL this spring.

WASL Summer Test Registration June 9-27

High school students still in need of the WASL requirement can take the summer WASL to meet standard.

Those students, along with students currently in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12, can register June 9-27 to take the Summer High School WASL, on-line at www.k12.wa.us/registration or by phone between 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at 1.866.400.WASL (9275). Students should have their SSID number ready when they register.

For more information on options for students not meeting graduation requirements, visit the state’s Web site to see the document, “Options for Students Not Graduating After Four Years of High School.”
