Summer WASL retakes in Renton scheduled for August 6-9

Summer WASL retakes registration happening now
Registration for summer WASL retakes is June 8 thru July 8 online or by phone
June 19, 2007—High school students who recently received their scores from WASL tests taken in this spring can use the reports to determine whether to retake the tests in the summer.

School Board approves late starts on 30 Fridays next year
June 14, 2007 - All schools will start 90 minutes late on most Fridays during the 2007-08 school year.

10th-grade WASL scores to be received in homes in early June
Registration for summer WASL retakes set for June 8 thru July 8
May 30, 2007 - Within the next few weeks, high school students who took the spring Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) will be mailed an individual score report with scores on the reading, writing and math tests.

Hazen High School honors top grads at school board meeting
May 23, 2007— Hazen High School students were recognized as Outstanding Seniors at the May 23 school board meeting.

Proposal offered to start school 90 minutes late on 30 Fridays next year
Families, staff have opportunity for input on proposal:
• Monday, June 4, 5:30 -7 p.m., Dimmitt Middle School
• Tuesday, June 5, 5:30-7 p.m. Nelsen Middle School

May 21, 2007—Community meetings are planned to hear from families, staff and community on a proposal to start school 90 minutes late on 30 Fridays next school year.

Renton schools offers balanced budget for 2007-08
May 15, 2007—The Renton School District, like other districts across the state, is tightening its belt in preparing next year’s budget in order to cope with projected state-mandated increases.

New principals, administrator welcomed at Board meeting
May 10, 2007 – The Renton School Board at a recent meeting welcomed three new principals to the district for the coming school year. The board also approved the appointment of a new executive director for elementary programs.

Lindbergh High School’s Outstanding Seniors named
May 9, 2007— Lindbergh High School students were recognized as outstanding seniors at May 9th Renton School Board meeting.

Hazen High School's Sport Stacking to be on Evening Magazine
April 27, 2007 - Hazen High School’s sport stacking team recently competed at the World Sport Stacking Championships in Colorado.

Renton High recognizes Outstanding Seniors
April 25, 2007 — Renton High School students were recognized as Outstanding Seniors at the April 25th School Board meeting.

Renton schools offers balanced budget for 2007-08
April 11, 2007—The Renton School District, like other districts across the state, is tightening its belt in preparing next year’s budget in order to cope with projected state-mandated increases in pay and benefits, and exponential increases in the cost of diesel fuel, construction materials, paper, insurance and other operating costs.

Free English classes offered to community
April 19, 2007 - Free English classes are being offered to community members looking to improve English skills to better talk with teachers, apply for jobs, communicate with neighbors and more.

July Board Meeting
April 18, 2007 - The regularly scheduled Board meeting for July 18, 2007 has been rescheduled to July 11, 2007. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Kohlwes Education Center Board Room, 300 SW seventh Street.

Top Renton School District teachers and staff recognized
April 12, 2007 - Renton School Board and Renton Chamber of Commerce name top educators for 2007.

Students should feel prepared, but not dread, WASL testing
April 12, 2007 - WASL testing scheduled for April 16-May 4, high schools began some testing in mid-March.

Work begins on new facility
April 10, 2007 - Construction has begun to build the Renton School District’s Operations and Maintenance facility at the site of the old Thomson Early Childhood Center at 7812 South 124th St.

Board votes to delay boundary changes for elementary schools in the Skyway area
April 9, 2007—The Renton School Board recently voted to delay creating new boundaries for Bryn Mawr, Campbell Hill and Lakeridge elementary schools.

Traffic Safety is now enrolling new students for Summer classes
March 28, 2007 - The next session of the Traffic Safety program is as follows: Class begins Wednesday June 27th and runs through July 31st Monday-Thursday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Kindergarten Registration Dates
March 16, 2007 - The Renton School District will hold registration for fall entrance to kindergarten on May 1 - 10 and May 31, 2007.

Traffic Safety is now enrolling new students for Spring classes
February 5, 2007 - The next session of the Traffic Safety program is as follows: Class begins Monday February 26th and runs through March 30th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

District offers information session on student Individualized Education Program (IEP)
Parents of elementary and early childhood special education students can attend an information session to learn more about the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Board votes to postpone re-opening of Honey Dew Elementary School
Jan. 29, 2007—The Renton School Board at their recent meeting voted to delay the re-opening of Honey Dew Elementary School until the 2008-09 school year.

Renton announces school make-up days missed due to inclement weather, power outages
January 25, 2007—The plan for making up the days of school missed so far this year due to inclement weather in November, December and January is, in part, to convert non-student days set aside for teacher training into regular school days.

Nominations sought for Ahead of the Class awards
January 2007 - Teacher awards bring recognition and $500 cash.
Local business leaders are again looking for nominations of Renton teachers for the annual Ahead of the Class award.

Renton School District to soon announce make up days for school closures
Tuesday, December 19, 2006—The Renton School District is working with union representatives and school principals to set make up dates for school closures due to inclement weather and power outages.

Renton bus driver acts quick to help students during dog attack
December 18, 2006 - Renton School District bus driver Susan Anderegg’s fast thinking might have saved the life of two Lakeridge Elementary School students who were attacked by a pit bull as they walked home from school on Wednesday.

Renton School District is hiring
The Renton School District is hosting a job fair this Saturday, Dec. 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the district offices, 300 SW 7th Street, Renton (across from Billy McHale’s restaurant). Opportunities include teacher aides, cooks, custodians, bus drivers and more. District representatives will be on hand to take applications and offer information on job descriptions, pay, benefits and more. Traffic Safety is now enrolling new students for Fall classes
October 2006 - The 2nd Trimester of the Traffic Safety Education program begins November 13th and runs through February 1st, Monday-Thursday, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Renton’s Communities in Schools (CISR) Board Chair Bob McBeth has been named Citizen of the Year.

Renton Rotary offers the gift of words to more than 1,000 third-graders
1,000 students in the Renton School District will receive the gift of words thanks to members of the Rotary Club of Renton.

Back-to-School Curriculum/Orientation Nights
Back-to-school orientation nights are held each year to provide parents/guardians an opportunity to visit their children's schools and classrooms and to participate in group conferences with their teachers.

August 2006 - A community open house, to offer information on the coming changes to the Thomson School site, is planned for Tuesday, August 29, 5 – 7 p.m. in the Thomson cafeteria, 7812 South 124th Street.

Test scores better at public schools than private
August 14, 2006 - The federal Education Department recently reported that, in reading and math, children attending public schools generally do as well as or better than comparable children in private schools.
