January 25, 2007—The plan for making up the days of school missed so far this year due to inclement weather in November, December and January is, in part, to convert non-student days set aside for teacher training into regular school days.
Leaders in the Renton teacher’s union and other bargaining groups negotiated a plan to make Jan. 29 and May 7 regular school days. Both of those days were previously scheduled as teacher training days and were non-student days.
Renton students will also attend school on May 25—a snow make-up day incorporated in the original calendar—and on June 25 and 26. Those days have been added to the end of the school year.
Based on state law, those few schools that were closed for an extended time because of power outages will not be required to make up additional days beyond those set for the whole district.
If more inclement weather causes additional school closures, those days likely would be added to the end of the school year.
Renton teachers and staff would make up the training and work days in the evening, on Saturdays or after school ends on June 26.
LATE STARTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SEMESTER FINALS CHANGED
The semester ending date for secondary schools has been extended to February 2. The 9:30 a.m. late starts at high schools for semester finals are moved to Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb 2. They were originally scheduled for Jan. 24, 25 and 26.
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION DATES REMAIN THE SAME
Graduation dates set for June 14 and 15 will not change because of the extended school year. Graduating seniors will be required to make up the work missed due to the closures through several means, including additional assignments, extended classes and community-based projects. Seniors will be notified by teachers and school administrators about how to make up the work.
