Superintendent Dolores Gibbons
announces plan to retire
After nearly 40 years in education, Renton Schools leader
to step down in June
.
December
20, 2005 - Superintendent Dolores Gibbons announced at a recent
School Board meeting her intent to retire at the end of this
school year.
Dr. Gibbons has provided exemplary leadership for the Renton
School District for nine years, expanding support and respect
for the district in the community and the state, while encouraging
and directing substantive improvements throughout the organization.
Renton School Board President
Al Talley captured the board’s
sentiments saying, “Dolores, you can never be replaced.”
“I truly wish I could talk you out of this,” Talley
said later. “Our students and teachers benefit from your
leadership, and you are an influence in this community and
throughout the region. But, if this is what’s right for
you, you’ve earned it.”
Since coming to Renton, Dr. Gibbons has managed more than
$400 million in voter-approved bonds and levies, allowing improvements
to school buildings and technology, including the continued
replacement or renovation of every school building in the district,
infusion of 21 st century technology into every classroom and
construction of the community-supported Renton IKEA Performing
Arts Center at Renton High School.
Dr. Gibbons has also served
as president of Renton Rotary; board member for United Way
of King County; advisory board member to the state’s
superintendent of public instruction; president of the Washington
Association of School Administrators, METRO region; member
of the minority affairs national committee, American Assoc.
of School Administrators; and in many other influential roles.
Dr. Gibbons is widely known for her skills in communication,
collaboration and advocacy. She has earned the high regard,
trust and respect of students, staff, parents and community
members by being open, engaged, knowledgeable, skilled, supportive
and inspirational.
Dr. Gibbons will be greatly missed, but her many accomplishments
have positioned the district well for continued progress toward
providing Renton students a world-class education.
Prior to Renton, Dr. Gibbons was
superintendent in the Mount Vernon ( Wash.) School District,
and served as assistant superintendent for elementary programs,
principal, assistant principal and teacher in the Federal Way
School District.
The Renton School Board will direct efforts on the search
for a new school leader. A search firm soon will be selected
to provide candidates here in the region, the state and nationally
a chance to apply for the position. There will be ample opportunity
for teachers, staff, students, parents and community members
to assist in the process.
