Spanish-speaking parents, students to learn to navigate high school and beyond

Lecture series, conducted in Spanish, will give parents more direction in helping students succeed

February 3, 2006 - The Renton School District, along with the Hazen High School PTSA, is offering Renton-area Latino parents a unique opportunity to learn how to help their children succeed in high school and beyond through a Spanish-language lecture series, Cultivating Our Future.

The interactive discussions, coordinated by Hazen teacher Celeste Brady, will provide parents with tools to help their children succeed in high school and develop a plan for success in college.

The series, which features inspirational speaker Victor Calderon, is designed to bridge the gap between the Latino community and higher education by giving parents and students a better sense of direction and ownership in the education process.

All lectures will be held at Hazen High School, 1101 Hoquiam Ave. NE, Renton, from 6 to 8 p.m. on

  • February 16
  • March 16
  • April 20
  • May 18

The Hispanic population in the district continues to grow each year, with many families speaking only Spanish. Currently, nearly 14 percent of district students are Hispanic: Nearly 40 percent of students at Highlands Elementary School are Hispanic. Interested students and families may download the Spanish-language flyer - PDF 153K announcing the lecture series.
