Nominations Sought for Renton Citizen of the Year

August 23, 2005 - Do you know someone who promotes and supports Renton? Someone who is dedicated to making the Renton community a great place to live, work, play and learn? Nominations for Renton Citizen of the Year are being accepted through August 31, 2005.

Nomination forms are available in the Chamber office or you can nominate online at http://www.ci.renton.wa.us/attract/citz_year.htm.

The Greater Renton Chamber of Commerce needs your help in identifying individuals from throughout the Renton community who perform acts of goodwill in an effort to help others and to improve the quality of life in Renton. Past winners include Gary Kohlwes, Charlie McGarrigle, King Parker, Betty Nokes, Doug Kyes, Keith Renfrew, Diane Dobson-Rebar, and last year's winner, Marcie Maxwell.

Some of these people make significant contributions through a number of local organizations in which they are involved. Others give selflessly in support of an individual group, local church, schools, a neighbor, or in other ways that make a difference in someone's life.

Representatives from the Renton Chamber of Commerce, City of Renton, and Renton Rotary will select the top three outstanding citizens, who will be honored at a special banquet. Out of the finalists, they will pick one candidate to be named Renton's Citizen of the Year.

Renton's Outstanding Citizens will be honored at a banquet on October 13, 2005, at 5:00 p.m., at the Renton Senior Activity Center. For information and reservations, visit www.renton-chamber.com or call 425-226-4560.

RENTON'S OUTSTANDING CITIZENS

  • Nominees do not need to reside in Renton, but their acts of service must have benefited Renton area residents. The selected three outstanding citizens will have demonstrated achievement in one or more of the following areas:
  • Served the Renton community above and beyond that required or expected through the individual's employment.
  • Demonstrated, either as an individual or through an organization, character, commitment, and/or leadership that made a positive difference.
  • Contributed his/her talents in helping others through acts of goodwill, without personal or monetary compensation.
  • Demonstrated leadership resulting in contributions that had a positive impact on the Renton community.

(Examples of this criteria include service that has positively affected clients of a nursing home, food bank, crisis clinic, youth group, or other community organization. Service could include voluntary stewardship of open space, helping to maintain a public space, or organizing others around a community issue or goal. It could include assisting with a local electoral process, helping to organize and carry out a community event, or providing individual talents and/or resources to assist local government, education, or health care organizations.)

Previous Outstanding Citizens must be re-nominated to be considered for Citizen of the Year.

The person selected as Citizen of the Year will have demonstrated achievement as an Outstanding Citizen (criteria above) AND demonstrated personal involvement:

  • In more than one area of interest.
  • Over a period of time.
  • In a way that resulted in significant impact within the Renton community.
