64 percent of Renton schools receive Academic Achievement Awards

Awards recognize schools that have raised achievement as measured by WASL

April 18, 2006 - Fourteen of Renton School District’s 22 schools have received Academic Achievement Awards for raising student achievement in mathematics, reading or writing as measured by last year’s Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

The awards are presented by the state’s education office in accordance with guidelines of the federal No Child Left Behind Act to recognize schools that are improving student achievement.

The district also received recognition with awards for improved student achievement in reading and writing scores for students in seventh and tenth grade.

Elementary schools and subjects:

  • Bryn Mawr, reading
  • Hazelwood, writing
  • Highlands, reading
  • Kennydale, reading and writing
  • Maplewood Heights, writing
  • Sierra Heights, writing
  • Talbot Hill, reading, writing and math
  • Tiffany Park, reading

Middle schools and subjects:

  • Dimmitt, reading and math
  • McKnight, writing
  • Nelsen, writing

High schools and subjects:

  • Hazen, reading, writing and math
  • Lindbergh, reading and writing
  • Renton, reading

Students in the district’s H.O.M.E. (Homeschool Opportunities for Merging Education) program, who opted to take the WASL, also saw gains in seventh- and tenth-grade test scores in reading, writing and math.
