Renton School Bus Accident
November 9, 2004 - An accident involving
a Renton School District bus this morning resulted in tragedy
as a man was struck in a crosswalk at the corner of North 6th
Street and Park Avenue North in Renton. The 57-year-old man
was
pronounced dead at the scene.
We are extremely saddened by this
accident and the grief it brings to the victim's family as
well as the driver of the bus. Our driver is a caring, considerate
man who has a 10-year history of safe driving in the district.
The
bus had recently passed an extensive safety inspection conducted
by the Washington State Patrol. Additionally, drivers conduct
a daily inspection of brakes, lights, mirrors and other points
on the bus prior to beginning their bus routes.
Details of
the accident are being investigated by the Renton Police
Department.
This is the first time in recent
memory the district has been involved in an incident that resulted
in such a tragedy. Our drivers have a history of keeping children
safe and being respectful and mindful of pedestrians and other
motorists. As a group, this will act to heighten their awareness
and they will continue to be safe on the road.
