Lost
by one vote: School districts will have to keep meeting the
Super Majority mark
February
2002 - Legislators in Olympia last night (2/20/02) voted down
an amendment to the state constitution that would have allowed
school districts in Washington state to pass elections with
a simple majority rather than the current supermajority requirement.
That
means districts will need to continue gaining 60 percent or
more yes votes to pass levy and bond issues.
The
vote in the House of Representatives was 65-31, missing by only
one vote the two-thirds majority necessary for passage. All
31 no votes were cast by Republicans. Sixteen Republicans voted
yes. Democrats voted unanimously for approval of the amendment
If
the amendment had passed in the House, the Senate would have
had to also pass it by a two-thirds vote, and the governor would
have had to approve it before placing it on a ballot for a public
vote.
