Two Issues
Will be on February 5, 2002 Election
Ballot for Renton Schools
The
Renton School Board will place two measures on the February 5,
2002 election ballot.
Proposition
I is the Educational Maintenance and Operations Replacement
levy, which makes up about 20 percent of the districts budget.
The levy, which is voted on for renewal every two years, replaces
an expiring levy approved by voters in 2000. The replacement levy
allows the district to continue paying for educational needs not
funded by the state such as additional teachers to reduce student/teacher
ratios, extracurricular activities, special education, building
maintenance, transportation, as well as instructional materials.
Proposition
II is a building improvement bond. For 20 years school staff,
parents, citizens and local business people have managed a three-phase
plan to rebuild, remodel, or renew every school building in the
district. Voters have supported the plan by passing capital facilities
bonds to help pay for improvements in phases I and II. The district
has built new schools where old ones cost too much to maintain,
and repaired those that are still serviceable. Projects have been
well managed, and completed as planned. Two phases of the plan
are complete or buildings included in those phases are currently
under construction. This is the third phase of the plan.
Both
measures would be paid for with a minimum tax increase beginning
in 2003 of about .50 cents per thousand of assessed value.
Major
projects on the ballot include rebuilding or remodeling the remaining
four elementary schools: Benson Hill, Kennydale, Hazelwood and
Renton Park. Other projects include technology improvements, seismic
upgrades, energy conservation efforts and other facilities and
athletic field upgrades.
