Renton
High School 2001 Race Scholars Speakers Program
March 2001 - Five speakers
from diverse backgrounds brought their messages of success and
challenge to Renton High School students this month as part
of the 2001 Race Scholars Speakers Program. The speakers included
Jeannette Allen, Native American activist and great-grand niece
to Chief Joseph; Robert Maestas, founder and executive director
of El Centro de la Raza; Matt Kelly, president and CEO of the
Mavin Foundation and Mavin magazine which celebrates multiethnic
Americans; James Gregory from the Department of History at the
University of Washington; and Judge Judith Hightower on African-American
and social justice issues.
Each presentation reached 150
to 190 students and provided inspiration and encouragement for
students to reach their dreams and strive for success. These
five presenters, all leaders in their respective fields, represent
a remarkable diversity and are excellent role models for Renton
High's own diverse student population. The program was coordinated
by Career Counselor Peter Schoonmaker and a collaborative effort
between the Tribes Project of Seattle and Renton High School.
