Business and Education,
Trading Places
October 2000 - What's a florist doing teaching third
grade? How about a massage therapist "massaging" words in language
arts? Or, a bank executive accounting for students as an assistant
principal? Things aren't topsy turvy, it's the Greater Renton Chamber
of Commerce's Business & Education Partnership 2000.
During the month of October, local business folks
and educators will spend half a day at each other's workplace to
experience first-hand what it's like to be an educator or vice-versa.
Twenty-one business people are matched with educators in the popular
chamber activity.
"It's a great opportunity for our businesses to get
involved with schools and learn what great things are happening
in the Renton School District," said Chamber Executive Director
Sharon Eklund.
Eklund also said its invaluable to teachers as they
learn about the skills students will need to compete in today's
employment marketplace. Whether it's high-tech computer skills or
graphic arts, the exchange can validate the relevancy of teachers'
instruction and curriculum.
Participants in this year's Education Partnership
include Bob Dunn of Cat's Eye Group, Suzanne Thompson of McLendon
Hardware, Greg Wilson of the Boeing Company, Principals Dan Sakaue
of Tiffany Park and Susan DeLong of Highlands and Rich Moore, RSD
Assistant Superintendent of Finance.
