McKnight Staff and students have set aside 30 minutes a day for reading
practice. Our goal at McKnight is to improve reading skills 25% over
the next 3 years. Research tells us that reading practice is key to
improved reading comprehension.
To help achieve this goal we have purchased Accelerated Reader, which
is a system designed to motivate, monitor, and manage student reading
practice, with accompanying teaching techniques for improving reading
growth.
We encourage parents to read with their child. Reading helps create
lifelong learners and critical thinkers.
Has your student been talking about their AR book? ZPD range?
Need a list of AR books?
McKnight has adopted the Accelerated Reader program as part of our
school-wide emphasis on reading improvement. Students have been tested
and a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) range has been set
for each student. This is the reading level at which their
reading is most likely to improve, but students have sometimes confused
this range as their reading grade level. Please reassure them that
it is not; most books are written between the 4 and 7 level even for
adults! To help you and your student find Accelerated Reader books,
we have added our AR list to our website as a pdf
file. These lists are also available at McKnight Library and soon
at your local public library.

School attire should be comfortable, but appropriate to an academic
environment. Immodest or suggestive attire is inappropriate. To encourage
learning and ensure success, students attending McKnight Middle School
must avoid wearing:
1. Clothing or accessories which advertise tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.
2. Clothing or accessories which sport profanity, make sexual inuendos,
or are in poor taste.
3. Sleeveless tops, halter tops, tank tops, half shirts, or short
t-shirts which expose the midriff.
4. Shirts which reveal cleavage, the stomach, or the back.
5. Clothing which allows underwear to be visible.
6. Shorts, skirts, or skirt slits which are less than fingertip in
length when arms are held straight down at the side.
7. Hats, scarves, sport headbands, or any other head coverings except
for religious reasons.
8. Clothing which could be perceived as "gang" related (i.e.,
bandannas, Old English print, tagging, etc.).
9. Heavy or insulated jackets or vests while in the building, including
lunchtime.
10. Chains, spiked jewelry, or pacifiers.
Remember: Health standards require
footwear to be worn at all times.
Students not complying with the dress code are subject to discipline.
In most cases, students will be warned or asked to change their clothing.
Students may also be sent to the office for a change of clothes. Repeated
offenses or refusal to change into appropriate clothing may result
in ISPS or further disciplinary action. School administrators are
the final authority in determining the appropriateness of school dress.
Further information on student dress code is available in the Student
Handbook.
