Music with Ms. McKay

Sharing Music with children is my greatest delight!
Real joy comes not from ease or riches or from the praise of people,
but from doing something worthwhile.

Goals for the Music Program with Ms. McKay

Classroom Expectations
I believe that all children are doing the best they can at any given moment. At times, some of them need the Teacher and Parent's assistance to be truly the best they can be. Generally, they are all able to follow the rules. When they are not, I have a conference with them to create a plan. If the problem persists, parents are contacted for support. The following student responsibilities are discussed, posted and sent home at the beginning of the year.

Classroom Behavior
1. Be respectful, helpful and stay in your own space.
2. Raise your hand, wait to be recognized, and listen to others.
3. Do your best. Follow directions.
4. Move Quickly and Quietly.
5. Take care of instruments, equipment and materials.

Grading & Assessment
Student's Music Skills are evaluated according to the Washington State EALR's and Benchmarks for the Arts which can be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/curriculumInstruct/Arts/frameworks/Emusic.aspx. These benchmarks describe the necessary knowledge and essential skills students are expected to achieve in the arts. The Renton School District Scope and Sequence for Music is aligned with the EALR's.
1. The student understands and applies arts knowledge and skills.
2. The student demonstrates thinking skills using artistic processes.
3. The student communicates through the arts (visual arts, music, drama, and/or dance).
4. The student makes connections within and across the arts to other disciplines, life, cultures, and work.
Grades will include written assignments, tests, compositions, self-assessment, teacher observation of skills, and CBPA(classroom-based performance assessment of the EALRs(Essential Academic Learning Requirements). Students in 4th and 5th grade have out of class performances or projects included in their grade. Children also receive daily grades for attitude and effort.

Numeric grading is as follows:
4 above grade level expectation
3 meets grade level expectation
2 needs extra support from the teacher
1 area of concern
