Seniors – Rotary Youth of the Month
September to May the Renton Rotary honors one exceptional senior from each of the Renton high schools. A selection committee of Rotary members reviews applications and interviews students. The award is given to students who possess leadership abilities, maintain a good grade-point average, participate in school activities and volunteer work in their community. The students and their parents are guests at a Rotary luncheon. See the Career Center to pick up an application, you only need to apply once.
Sophomores – Are you ready?
We will be seeing you during the first week of second semester when your Language Arts classes head to the Lab for your “Career Cruising” sessions. You will be able to take an interest inventory online, investigate colleges, and really learn how to manipulate this great college and career planning software!
Juniors – What are you doing with the rest of your life after high school?
What’s the difference between SAT and ACT, and do I need one? We’ll be answering these and other pressing junior questions during the week of February 11th , when all US History classes will spend class time in the Career Center and the Lab. Parents of juniors – please remember that a copy of the “Junior Guide” is available on the Career Center webpage.
Seniors – continue to finish those college applications and be sure to apply for Financial Aid!
Community and technical college applicants should be visiting their prospective schools and following through on the application process. Be sure to reference the “Senior Survival Guide” if you need a refresher on what to do and when to do it, or see Mrs. Buckingham if you have questions!
Upcoming Events
The Career Center, along with the generous support of Hazen’s PTSA, is hosting the Annual College Fair for Juniors on May 2nd, 10 – 11am in the gymnasium. Juniors will be required to attend during their Culminating Project period. Their will be representatives from colleges and universities, community colleges, technical colleges, apprenticeship programs and the military. Students and parents will have the opportunity to gather information about tuition, admission requirements, financial aid and have their questions addressed. Parents with students at any grade level are welcome to attend.
Be sure to check the Events Calendar for a variety of opportunities like field trips, information sessions and career speakers. The Daily Bulletin is also a great resource to keep-up on what events and opportunities are available.
College Visits
Many colleges’ admission representatives visit Hazen in the fall to give presentations about their schools to interested seniors. These visits take place in the Career Center, usually during first or second lunch. Also, many other colleges from around the country host information sessions in the community at this time of year. This list will be updated as more schools schedule visits, so keep checking back. Click to view the complete list of visits.
SAT & ACT Information
When are the next SAT and ACT tests being offered? Find out here.
| Hazen High School Code: 480-987 | | SAT - www.collegeboard.com | | ACT - www.actstudent.org |
What do all of these letters stand for? What kinds of tests are these? These are common questions and fortunately, we have the answers! Here is a brief run down of the alphabet soup.
- PSAT - The PreSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a test offered one time each fall, primarily to high school Juniors as a practice SAT and qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Yes, the PSAT can be taken by anyone but only Juniors can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition and therefore the majority of PSAT takers are Juniors.
- SAT - The Scholastic Aptitude Test is one of the college entrance exams accepted by most colleges and universities. The test is offered several times a year and can be taken more than once. (Please see the list of test dates and registration deadlines below.) We recommend first taking the test in the spring of your Junior year and then again in the fall of your Senior year if you feel it is needed.
- ACT - The American College Test is also a widely recognized college entrance exam. It is also offered multiple times per year. (Please see the list of test dates and registration deadlines below.) We recommend taking at least one of these tests your Junior year and another one fall of your Senior year, in necessary.
The SAT and ACT are both equally accepted by most colleges and universities. They differ in several distinct areas. The ACT is often described as a “content based” test while the SAT tests “critical thinking”. Specifically the ACT includes a science reasoning section, a trigonometry section and tests English grammar to a greater degree. The SAT tests more vocabulary and is not entirely multiple choice.
Can’t decide which test you should take? Read more about the SAT & ACT, or see a side by side comparison of the two tests. The Career Center offers test prep books that can be checked out and a free online test prep site with the SAT, ACT and PSAT included. See the Career Center for details.
